Colorado Tint Laws
Colorado Window Tint Laws at a Glance
If you're considering window tint for your vehicle, it's important to understand Colorado's tint regulations before installation. At Perfect Shade Tinting Solutions, we help drivers throughout Highlands Ranch and the surrounding areas select high-quality window tint that enhances comfort, privacy, and appearance while remaining compliant with state guidelines.
According to Colorado Revised Statute 42-4-227, the following tint regulations apply to most passenger vehicles:
- Windshield: Must allow at least 70% of light transmission.
- Windshield Tint Strip: Non-reflective tint is permitted on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
- Front Side Windows: Must allow at least 27% visible light transmission (VLT).
- Rear Side Windows: Must allow at least 27% VLT.
- Rear Window: Must allow at least 27% VLT.
- Exception for Rear Windows: Windows behind the driver, including the rear window, may be darker than 27% VLT if the windshield and front side windows allow at least 70% light transmission.
- Reflective or Mirrored Tint: Not permitted.
- Metallic Tint: Not permitted.
- Red or Amber Tint: Prohibited.
- Medical Exemptions: Colorado provides a process for qualifying medical exemptions that may allow darker tinting.
Note: A lower VLT percentage means a darker tint. For example, 5% "limo tint" is much darker than Colorado's standard legal limit for most windows.
